Stand Up To Cancer (SU2C) is an annual fundraising telecast by the Entertainment Industry Foundation. It will be held broadcast live 7 to 9 p.m., from the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles, with numerous broadcast and cable networks donating one-hour of simultaneous commercial-free primetime for the nationally televised fundraising special. The show will also stream live on both Hulu and Yahoo.
Stars set to appear on the show include Gwyneth Paltrow, Reese Witherspoon, Pierce Brosnan, Jennifer Anniston, Halle Berry, Jon Hamm, Kiefer Sutherland, Ben Stiller, Will Ferrell, Mark Harmon, Rob Lowe, and many more. Special performances by The Who, Jennifer Hudson, Lupe Fiasco & Common, Ariana Grande, Dave Matthews and others will be held during the show.
James Powers, a volunteer with the American Cancer Society’s Relay For Life of Cullman County, set up the party at Logan’s Roadhouse where he is employed. A survivor of childhood cancer, Powers said he wanted to participate in the Stand Up To Cancer event to show his support for those who are battling the disease.
“I’ve been through it, I know what it’s like,” Powers said. Diagnosed with acute lymphocytic leukemia when he was just a toddler, he said he’s buried the bad memories of his treatment and remembers mostly the good thinks, like middle of the night trips to the hospital’s ice cream shop or play area. He does, however, know how hard it was on his family. “It was much worse for my parents than for me,” he said.
Powers said he’s grateful for the managers agreeing to host the event. Other events are being held out of the county, but none were schedule in Cullman. “I’m thankful that they’re letting me do it here,” he said. “I’m sure there are people who would like to attend but didn’t want to go out of town.”
Deb Veres, general manager of the Cullman Logan’s Roadhouse, said she is happy to host the event. “We are big supporters of any cancer awareness organization and Relay For Life,” Veres said.
There is no charge to attend the Cullman event and no reservations are necessary. Food and drinks may be purchased during the event. Donations will be accepted or donors can call in during the telethon. Powers said the supporters may sign up for the chance to have one of the participating celebrities call you during the broadcast or contact you through Twitter or Facebook.
